2:49 AM || i finished watching bastard out of carolina on tv a little while ago, and what can i say? the movie was disturbing. yet it was one of the most powerful, intense, emotionally touching movies i have ever seen. i wanted to reach out to the little girl named 'bone' and just take all her pain from her abusive stepfather away. don't get me wrong. there were some very graphic scenes in the movie (such as the rape scene) where i just wanted to turn away and yell in disgust. however, the performance by jena malone (the actress who played 'bone') was just outstanding, considering she was only 12 at the time. it really got my heart pounding, just watching this victim of child abuse get beat. another thing that really got me mad was when bone's mother, 'anney,' allowed her husband to hurt 'bone.' it's so sad to think that 'anney' loved her husband so much that she seemed to have picked him over her child. one of the most compelling, realistic, and informational movies i've ever seen, bastard out of carolina really moved me in a way no other movie ever has. i would highly recommend this movie to anyone who can sit through painful, shocking, horrific scenes, because there are lots of them. thanks for recommending it to me pammy!

"Trials, temptations, disappointments -- all these are helps instead of hindrances, if one uses them rightly. They not only test the fibre of a character, but strengthen it. Every conquered temptation represents a new fund of moral energy. Every trial endured and weathered in the right spirit makes a soul nobler and stronger than it was before." -- James Buckham
